It Could Have Been Worse

My Uncle got his ass blown out of the sky by one of these.

He was flying one of these.

He told me his adversary was seasoned…more experienced and a a better pilot in a dogfight. He also stressed that although his plane was supposed to be superior…it wasn’t…or he didn’t know how to take advantage of his new machine. He said the German was on him like white on rice…or something like that…couldn’t shake him. He also told me that after he bailed out, the German pilot (who just shot his ass down) flew by and waved at him. He could’ve killed him if he wanted…but he didn’t. Is that honor or respect?

Although, after he floated down, he spent some time in a German Prison Camp, but he lived to tell his story. He said he was treated fine…with honor. He told me pilots have their own code.

I guess that was then.

No, it is a Messerschmitt ME-109. The Porsche of the sky back then.

Which reminds me I have some pics from my visit to the Smithsonian.
I need to go to the little airport north of here and capture some of those Mustangs in flight, too.
    Too much to do…

You seriously need to make the pilgrimage to the Lone Star Flight Museum here in Galveston.
And yes, fork over your $700, and you too, can ride the mighty B-17G. Lesser amounts get you the B-25 Mitchell or Stearman trainer.
They’ve got a Convair B-58 Hustler in there. Bad stainless steel juju, at Mach 2.
Flying status includes the P-51, P-40, P-47, Spitfire MkIV, and incredibly, a Hawker Hurricane, one of only two known to be flyable.
They did that restoration in-house, by the way. It’s beyond awesome.
You can reach up and touch ‘em all. They understand what a rush it is.
Pass my salute to your Uncle. It is an honor that such men are among us.
