Australian Moonshine

I’ve had this bottle sitting on my shelf or in my cabinet for many many years. My friend who lives in Australia gifted it to me a long time ago. It has no label, just the name “Mary” on top of the cap. I would say it’s about 25 years of age, or older. The seal is as tight as tight can be.

His uncle makes moonshine Down Under. He distills the liquor in the fall and winter, and waits until spring when his Pear trees bloom. As soon as the pears bloom, he attaches (ties) a bottle over the pear and lets them mature to full size…inside the bottle. When ripe, he snips the pear sprig, fills the bottle with the liquid, and seals it as tight as possible.

Ever seen a pear tree with a hundred or so bottles hanging from it? Me either, but I’ve seen the pictures…too damn funny, and he had an orchard full. Pretty good sized operation.

Another interesting fact: This bottle made it to me in the diplomatic pouch from the Australian Embassy in Canberra via their embassy in D.C. Obviously, they don’t export this stuff.

I’d heard of this, but never have seen even a picture or knew for sure it was real. That is awesome.
Just wondering what special occasion will be the cause for finally breaking the seal. (?)

Pretty cool, eh? I’m still thinking about an occasion.

I think a windy day would be a good occasion.
