I’m (unseen) on the leeward (port) side fighting the foresail. I was trimming that day. I can tell you, I was getting wet…soaking damn wet…almost knocked off the boat wet, and I was wearing a harness. This was a fast and powerful boat, and she would take everything out of you. As you can see, we had some “meat” on the high side, but not enough. She would take you all the way to your limits. Masthead rig, as opposed to Fractional. All said and done, we had ten of us on her, and we couldn’t tame her. When we popped the chute downwind, it was all about hanging on and watching everything. It was a small boat, a Wavelength 30, but she had a temper. I’m telling you, it took at least ten people to calm her down in a good blow, but she would haul ass if you treated her right, and got her balanced out. Hell, I guess she had too much sail, or we flew too much sail. Probably the latter.

Anyway, we took some girlie girls for a ride on occasion…they did not come back for more, none of ‘em. They said that (and we were) was fucking crazy, and couldn’t possibly believe anyone would want to do that. One of ‘em once, needed some stitches, and we were going to sew her up…and she flipped all the way out. I mean she really lost her shit…couldn’t stand the sight of her blood. Went absolutely ballistic on us. Hell, one of the crew was a MD, doing his internship at a local hospital in the emergency room…he knew how to clean and sew. Never saw her again. I think she was a tad bit traumatized, but she did go get some stitches at a hospital. It was just her hand.

I wouldn’t know, but I’ve been told that riding a sailboat in a good blow in like riding a wild ass bronco. I’ve never ridden a bull, but I’ve ridden some sailboats that made me want to talk to The Maker.

This picture doesn’t do her justice, but it’s the only one I can find right now.

Too much fun…I still loves me some VOODOO.

…is the Icelandic Horse. When the Juju Woman and I were in Iceland, these were our horses. Mine, with the white stripe, was named “The Dream”, hers was named “The Wanderer”. They’re damn near sure-footed. It’s snowing, sleeting, ice pelleting, blowing, and cold. They never missed a step, and we were traveling over some harsh terrain…ice fields, lava deserts,,,etc. These horses have a couple more gears (gaits) than other horses. They are known as the “five-gaited” breed. When you shift one into the “tölt”, the “ambling gait”, it is a great ride. Smooth, but fast. They’re different to ride, comfortable, but different. Shorter, longer haired, and thicker coated, you would be if you had to live in those conditions. The Icelandic horse has evolved over the years…since about the 9th century.

If you ever have the opportunity to take one for a ride, go for it…I highly recommend it.

Anyway, here’s my buddy Sire, the Head Rib Cooker. He doesn’t light the grill until he’s had about eight beers or so, and that ain’t no joke. This guy is serious about his ribs. He doesn’t know his age, or where he was born, but he can damn sure cook. He also doesn’t know his “given” name. Interesting guy. He’s not “book smart”, but he’s wise in other ways. He was dropped off on a island when he was a baby. No formal education whatsoever, but a very smart guy. We became friends. He’s hard to understand, because his “language” is a combination of English, French, Dutch, and Spanish. When I can’t understand him, I go to sign. He has basically invented his own way of communicating. Hell, it works.

I have a post in my head about how fucked up it is with Iran, and what it will take to sink their Navy, and what will happen if the Middle East goes wonkers anytime soon. How do you defend against Russian Sunburn missiles? But instead, I give you a shot of the fried chicken I made last night. For now, it beats the hell out of talking about the disruption of the flow of oil and how that will effect Western economies. Closing the Strait of Hormuz is a lot worse than my fried chicken. I made some white gravy, some mashed potatoes, some green peas, and a skillet of spoon-bread. Damn good, is all I can say. My Grandmother would be proud of my meal, but not proud of who’s driving our country.

Anyway, here’s the chicken.

I kid you not. My little buddy Stretch will not give up. He just will not give up or run from anything. He knows nothing of size. He is short in stature, but long. His lungs are long, that’s why he almost sounds like a full grown Lab when he barks. He is faster than you think, and can cut on a dime. His genetic wheelbase. He can jump higher than most, and will not hesitate. He is fiercely loyal, but a sweet dog at the same time. He loves kids and adults. He loves people in general, unless he gets a bad “vibe”. When he gets a bad “vibe”, I pay close attention. You see, he doesn’t know how to lie, or fake it. He’s all about the truth, what he feels. He’s a good judge of character. If he gets the “willies” when a stranger is around, I pay really close attention. He’s never wrong. Never. I can read him, and he can read me. I’d say we bonded. I keep him in shape, and he keeps me alert. He lets me know about things before I can hear ‘em or feel ‘em. You could say he’s a watchdog. I call him my partner.

Anyway, here he is patrolling the Stretchengetti. Something going on the other side of the fence that I couldn’t hear or smell. He doesn’t miss anything. I always trust him. He is my friend, and my little buddy.

Yesterday, I was so pissed about the bills in the House and Senate that challenge, in my opinion, the basic premise of Freedom of Speech. The government wants to control the people like the Borg. Eventually, they want to assimilate you. They’re taking baby steps now, but wait and see what happens if they’re successful. I’ve been aware of these bills for a while, but when major web sites go “dark” in protest…well, all I can say is to pay attention to what that government intends to be the end result. Think ahead. They’re testing the waters, so to say.

So, last night I created a new pizza with a different dough recipe. I call it the Too Much Government Pizza. I had to name it something, and it felt like a good idea at the time. I still think it was a good idea, and it was good…especially for new dough. I like new dough. If you don’t know, dough is a bitch to get right, especially on the first time. Three cheeses, bacon, onion, artichokes, poblano peppers, some herbs out of our garden, and some tomato sauce I put up last summer, and fresh garlic. The Juju Woman gave it an eight…not bad for a first shot, and she doesn’t like too much dough. Also, had a nice bottle of red table wine to take the edge off.

BEFORE

AFTER

The dinosaurs signify mother and daughter, or mother and son, or father and daughter, or father and son. It it is what it is.

Damn good pizza is all I can say.

Things happened so fast, I couldn’t get a picture of the chase (and I had the long lens on) after he cut to the chase. Ever seen a doxie go after a deer? Fortunately, the buck broke for cover, but I’m telling you, this little doggie is fearless…and it might be his downfall. Stretch scares the shit out of me sometimes. I’m up everyday, and I do mean everyday, at 5:00 am. Stretch is up at 5:00 am. His cycle has adjusted. He is “barking-ass hungry” at five. I should rename him to “Slinker”. He now expects to be fed at that time. He is relentless. If you don’t get up…he will give you the Atomic Head Slam…no way anyone could sleep through that. He has perfected the “wake up call”. No alarm clocks needed around here. I’m thinking of getting him a job at a hotel.

As a result of the Juju Women’s new project…she is toned..I see the dawn and the sunrise every day. I go to bed earlier. The dog goes to bed earlier. This “spring ahead fall back” shit doesn’t matter. Stretch operates on a 24 hour clock regardless of the time zone biannual adjustments. He was born in DST…I think that has something to do with it…just a guess. I am losing sleep over it, yes I am. If I wanted to sleep in, I’d have to board his ass.

Here he is giving me another “look”. He has many. I call this the “bar-code look” , because you could scan the hair on the top of his head. That inquisitive look.

Anyway, I’ve seen every dawn for the last six months, which is not a bad thing…I guess.
